The most beautiful `I do`…

To be able to call this beautiful area part of the country I call home, is a privilege.  Every time I visit the Cape in South Africa, I come away feeling truly inspired by the creativity and the sheer natural beauty of the surroundings.  Yes, if you have not visited the Cape, it should definitely be at the very top of your ‘bucket list’.  Tucked  away, in the Drakenstein Valley, is ‘Babylonstoren‘, a Cape Dutch farm like no other…a haven of fruit and vegetable orchards, flowers and vineyards.  I could dedicate this article to writing about their breathtaking gardens, their unique restaurant, their greenhouse cafe, serving sandwiches wrapped in brown paper bags and yummy rosewater cupcakes or even  their resident tortoise that wonders around freely.  Instead, I am going to tell you about a wedding…a wedding that will take your breath away!

Almost two years ago, in December 2012, Janina and Lean tied the knot.  Every time I sat down to write about their day, I got overwhelmed with all I wanted to say.  This is why it has taken me so long.  Their day was filled with romance, genuine love, and pure happiness…all you need to make a wedding effortlessly complete!  What an honour it was to be part of their bridal party and as I sat listening to their speeches, at a long table, I felt as if I was sitting in their dining room.  It was just so warm and intimate!  The details of their day reflected so much about them as individuals and as a couple.  These images captured by ‘Welovepictures’, speak a thousand words!  Yes, these two are this stylish and good looking and I just adore them both.

How did you and Lean meet…
We met at a braai of a mutual friend – Lean was living with him in digs and I was good friends with him from school. We hadn`t met before although we had so many of the same friends…which we only found out later! It was a very special relationship from the beginning.
The proposal…
We were on holiday at his parents’ holiday house in Stilbaai. We both planned to celebrate our 5th (dating) anniversary so I did not have a clue that there was anything else he was planning…as I was part of these plans… But all the while, he was actually planning on proposing! So we went on a boat trip down the river to where the river ends. We had the best time and had planned on giving each other a gift, when Lean out of nowhere went on his knees…I was completely overwhelmed and caught up in all the tears and excitement.  I could not have dreamt of anything better and more romantic! We spent a long time on the river just by ourselves, trying to take everything in and then later rode all the way back to the jetty where his family were waiting with champagne! What an amazing celebration!
The highlight of our wedding…
Goodness, this is too difficult! We had a whole weekend wedding celebration, so for us, the entire weekend with all the activites we did, was a highlight! However, I must say, the biggest surprise for us, was the most heavenly amazing song from my siblings that they sang to us in the ceremony! It was undescribably the most beautiful music ever and so special coming from them.
Tell us about your wedding venue and why you loved it so much…
We decided on Babylonstoren as it was for both Lean and myself the most special place we have been to, and it fitted right in with what we wanted to do with our wedding weekend. We wanted to keep our wedding personal so we did not have a very extensive guest list. We wanted our families and close friends to stay with us at the venue so that we could have a weekend of celebrations rather than just the one day. It was just that! And the venue lends itself to very special and unique activities that we could do, set in the most beautiful picturesque winelands of Franschhoek.
Advice you can suggest to brides planning their wedding…
Try not to forget that the focus is you and your new husband, and that ultimately it should be perfect for the two of you!
Your photographer…
We could not have been more happy with Travis and Maike from Welovepictures! They are awesome and understood exactly what we wanted, and fit right in! We loved the way their photos are so organic and real. We wanted natural, real photos, which they perfectly executed, and along with their lovely personalities, it was a great honour to have them as part of our special day!
Tell us about your dress, who made it…
I fell in love with my dress the very first time I tried it on! It was also the only dress that I tried on 🙂 It seems a bit crazy, but I just loved it and decided that was my dress! It was made by a South African designer, Abigail Betz. She is very talented and I loved her style and personality. It was really special to go for fittings and end up drinking tea for most of the time.
Challenges while planning your wedding…
The guest list….
DIY elements in your wedding…
All the flowers and decorations came from the venue itself in an organic way – from the gardens of Babylonstoren! And then smaller DIY things included the guests’ gift wrapping and table plan..
Your first dance…
“A thousand years” by Christina Perri.
Your honeymoon…
Aaaaaah! Goodness, that was amazing! haha! We went to the States, started at Key West, then on a cruise in the Carribean stopping at Haiti, Jamaica and Mexico! And then for the last few days; Christmas in New York!
Your kitchen tea and bridal shower?
My kitchen tea was beautiful and so perfect!  Just how I always dreamt.  It was a high tea, all in pastels with a giant DIY hot air balloon for decoration! Everywhere were beautiful ribbon mobiles, cupcakes and macaroons!
My hens party was the next level up! Haha! Had the best time with my girl friends! They dressed me up in Lean’s golf bib (he is a good golfer), very tight dress, crazy balloons and colourful paper skirt! Best night out in town with the girls!
