Our First Home Shoot

After searching Dubai for the perfect apartment that they could call their own, it was love at first sight for Dirk and Maude Wagner when they walked in and saw the most incredible view of the Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai.  Although the apartment  was in need of some finishing touches and TLC, it was an exciting task Maude (interior decorator) could not wait to start.

When we walked in to photograph their home, Maude was bustling around setting her dining room table and in no time at all it looked like something out of a magazine, (not to mention the delicious Bloomingdale’s cupcakes).  For a lady who is often found wearing black their apartment is a complete contrast as she loves to decorate using white (and silver).  Her colour scheme definitely creates a relaxed and peaceful environment and whenever I go and visit I don’t want to leave.

I love my home because…

It is light and sunny with large windows allowing the sunlight to shine through during the day.  At night we are spoilt by the Dubai fountains, Burj Khalifa and Dubai’s beautiful city lights.  Our home also reflects our own personal taste.

My favourite aspect/item in our home…

We love the wooden parquet floors and the separate study room.  We have top quality built in kitchen appliances that help to make cooking so much easier.

My decorating style is…

Contemporary, understated elegance that is sophisticated and stylish.

I am inspired by…

I love monochrome colour schemes and I like to play around with different textures in the same colour like silk, velvet, linens and cottons.

Decorating my home in Dubai…

Decorating my home in Dubai was quite easy.  As an Interior Designer I know the best people in the business.  I had a great team of reliable people that helped me to fulfill my vision.  The whole process took 3 weeks from beginning to end.  I changed the colour of all the cabinetry through out the apartment.  I re-painted the walls & ceilings and installed a light wooden parquet floor throughout the apartment.  I also changed all the ceiling lights.

My tips to expats who are decorating with the idea of returning home after two or so years…

Make your house a home from the start, even if you plan to stay in Dubai for a short period of time.  Many people start out by buying cheap, temporary furniture and decor but end up staying in Dubai much longer than originally planned.  They then later get rid of the cheaper furniture and invest in furniture and pieces that they really like.

My advice for home decor enthusiasts…

Surround yourself with things that you love.  Do not follow trends, but follow your heart.  Dare to be different by decorating your space in your own unique way that reflects your personality and style.

My favourite decor store…

I have more than one, Indigo Living, Marina and @ Home.

My favourite destinations…

I love Cape Town, to me it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  It’s a place where you will find wonderful people, great food, fantastic shopping and breathtaking nature.  It is also a melting pot of very creative people and is South Africa’s interior design capital.  Another one of my favourite destinations is Livingstone in Zambia.  Victoria Falls is absolutely incredible.

What I love about Dubai…

Dubai is like home to me.  I love the different people from different nationalities and cultures.  I love the fact that we do not have freezing cold winters.
