Nicky Mclean Photography

As a little girl I have always been fascinated with babies, I used to love playing with my dolls and pretending to be a mum.  Everything about a new baby is just the most incredible miracle and it is no wonder that parents want to capture every second of this precious little bundle`s life.  A friend of mine told me she had taken over 2000 photos of the first 2 months of her little girl on her phone alone.  I personally think capturing your babies first few days is as important as your wedding photos (or even more important).

Nicky Mclean needs no introduction to Dubai, as she is the lady behind the camera capturing these gorgeous photographs below.  I was blown away when Nicky explained some of what goes on behind the scenes in order for her to capture a unique and special image of a newborn.  Her relaxed, calm nature is sure to put any mum at ease.  How gorgeous are the props she uses?  I love all the textures she plays around with and the colour schemes she chooses.  The best part is Nicky is not limited to newborn photos and takes the most gorgeous maternity, kiddies and family pictures.  You can look forward to seeing a lot more of her work on `i am captivated`.

Briefly describe your business…

I am photographer specialising in newborns (5-10 days when they are at their most malleable), children’s first years and families.

Why you love what you do…

Those first days, weeks, and months in your child’s life pass in a flash and you’re so busy getting used to the lifestyle changes this little bundle has wrought that you don’t have to chance to take it all in and enjoy it.  I record the first special moments, the sight of which will conjure up happy memories for a lifetime.

Some of the challenges of shooting new borns…

Anxious dads!

Some of the challenges when shooting newborns…

That the parents are properly prepared and put at their ease – if they are relaxed the baby will be too. And I like to make sure I have a complete understanding of what they want me to capture in their child.

One experience working with a new born that you will always remember…

It’s probably one that every mother dreads but rarely happens.  We had styled and settled Baby X (to preserve his blushes) into a cocoon of blankets and just when we were set, he promptly pooped.  We laughed uproariously, cleaned up and carried on (I always have spares!).  It was definitely an ice-breaking moment.  Mum and I have been best friends ever since.

How to make mums feel at ease…

Tell them this story so that they can stop worrying it might happen to them!  I also tell them that I am the best babysitter they will ever have so just relax and enjoy it.

Preparations before the shoot…

I always meet the mum to-be in advance and we go through what will be involved so she is prepared and can participate and be involved as much as she wishes, with colour choices and preferences, any special presents they want included, what props they prefer etc.

Why you love Dubai…

Dubai is like a fresh canvas where anything is possible.  It gives you the opportunity to be the best you can be.  People here are open to new ideas rather than bogging you down with prejudices or preconceptions.
